If you have say RMAN level 0 on Saturday and level 1's sun, mon, tues why would you want to keep the archivelogs from say sun, mon, tuesday? Why is backing up archivelogs through RMAN important at all? If you back up the data, you dont need the archivelogs to roll forward.
And yes, I have read the manual.

what if you want to rollforward to Monday 2pm?
What are you going to do then?

You may have read, but not understood. How do you get to a consistent point in time without archivelogs? One and only one way: a cold backup, or an import (which is not a backup strategy).

You need the logs if you wish to go to a specific point in time between the backups.eg, if you want to restore to 10 am tuesday, and your last incremental is Monday night, you would need the level 0, Monday's level one, then the archive logs generated between Monday nights backup and 10am tuesday.
