SQL> startup;
ORACLE instance started.

Total System Global Area 680665088 bytes
Fixed Size 2178736 bytes
Variable Size 520094032 bytes
Database Buffers 150994944 bytes
Redo Buffers 7397376 bytes
ORA-00201: control file version 11.2.0.0.0 incompatible with ORACLE version
11.1.0.0.0
ORA-00202: control file: 'C:\APP\PRAGN\ORADATA\ORCL\CONTROL01.CTL'

I may have used incorrect code when my professor told us to alter the SPFILE (SCOPE=SPILE) to add the new control file to the
initialization file.

this is what I used --SQL> ALTER SYSTEM SET COMPATIBLE = '11.1.0' SCOPE = SPFILE;

Here are the exact steps that I took which led me to this issue.
. Where is the existing control file located and what is the name?
Hint: Query the dynamic performance view V$CONTROLFILE. Note: You can also use V$PARAMETER,
or execute the SHOW PARAMETER command to display the name and the location of the control file.
SQL> select name, status FROM v$CONTROLFILE;

NAME
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
STATUS
-------
C:\APP\PRAGN\ORADATA\ORCL\CONTROL01.CTL

C:\APP\PRAGN\FLASH_RECOVERY_AREA\ORCL\CONTROL02.CTL

12. Try to start the database without any control files. Simulate this by changing one of the control file in the parameter
file or deleting one of the control file. What happens in the startup? What are the error messages in the Alert log?
Hints: - Shutdown the database using the IMMEDIATE option.
- Delete the 1st control file but keep it in your recycle bin - - C:\APP\oradata\INST1\CONTROL01.CTL
- Start the database.
SQL> startup;
ORACLE instance started.

Total System Global Area 680665088 bytes

Variable Size 520094032 bytes
Database Buffers 150994944 bytes
Redo Buffers 7397376 bytes
ORA-00205: error in identifying control file, check alert log for more info

13. Restore Control01.CTL from your recycle bin and then restart Oracle.
SQL> startup;
ORACLE instance started.

Total System Global Area 680665088 bytes
Fixed Size 2178736 bytes
Variable Size 520094032 bytes
Database Buffers 150994944 bytes
Redo Buffers 7397376 bytes
ORA-00214: control file 'C:\APP\PRAGN\FLASH_RECOVERY_AREA\ORCL\CONTROL02.CTL'
version 4865 inconsistent with file 'C:\APP\PRAGN\ORADATA\ORCL\CONTROL01.CTL'
version 4849

14. Multiplex the existing control file as follows.
a). Add a new control file CONTROL04.CTL in C:\U4.
cool.gif. Confirm that both control files are being used.
Hints: - Before shutting down the database alter the SPFILE (SCOPE=SPILE) to add the new control file to the
initialization file.
--SQL> ALTER SYSTEM SET COMPATIBLE = '11.1.0' SCOPE = SPFILE;

System altered.
- Shut down the database, and then copy the 1st Control File to a new file with the name CONTROL04.CTL in C:\U4.
- Start up the database.
- Query the dynamic performance views V$CONTROLFILE or V$PARAMETER, or use the SHOW PARAMETER
command to confirm that both control files are being used.
SQL> select name from V$CONTROLFILE;

no rows selected
